Narrative:

Right-hand ignition had been written up on leg prior to ours. It was audibly checked ok by maintenance. R-hand ignition was used to start #2 engine. There was no light-off. QRH procedure was used to resolve problem. On climb out shortly after takeoff, I wondered about what the implications were regarding the MEL and it being the r-hand ignition. We learned that there was a maintenance procedure that should have been done. At that point, we realized or error that the MEL should have been consulted on the ground after the QRH procedure. Our thinking was that the last crew had written the ignition system up and had obviously continued. When we went back to look at the logbook, we realized they had done the same thing. Except they made the write-up appear as though it had happened in ZZZ instead of the departure city.
