Narrative:

Due to a confusing maintenance write-up on a pack deferral, where the wrong pack was deferred, we unintentionally operated on the left (good) pack, which happened to be erroneously deferred. Factors that contributed to this are the maintenance write up that 'suspected' a right pack leak (which was actually bad pack), and the placement of the deferral sticker in between both pack switches. In range to cvg, we made a call to maintenance to see if they could fix the pack (due to passenger comfort). Upon checking the deferral once again, it was determined that the (B) section of the deferral was for the left pack and not the right pack. We determined the wrong pack had been deferred and maintenance was notified so they could fix the problem. Supplemental information from acn 620919: in hindsight, I should have been more vigilant in reading the deferral. When we reported to the aircraft, it was very hot, we were trying to cool it down for the passenger, and it didn't occur to me that maintenance would inspect 1 pack and then defer the other in error.

Title: A CRJ 200 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH THE WRONG AIR CONDITIONING PACK DEFERRED AS INOP. R PACK FAILED, L PACK DEFERRED PER THE MEL.

Narrative: DUE TO A CONFUSING MAINT WRITE-UP ON A PACK DEFERRAL, WHERE THE WRONG PACK WAS DEFERRED, WE UNINTENTIONALLY OPERATED ON THE L (GOOD) PACK, WHICH HAPPENED TO BE ERRONEOUSLY DEFERRED. FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THIS ARE THE MAINT WRITE UP THAT 'SUSPECTED' A R PACK LEAK (WHICH WAS ACTUALLY BAD PACK), AND THE PLACEMENT OF THE DEFERRAL STICKER IN BTWN BOTH PACK SWITCHES. IN RANGE TO CVG, WE MADE A CALL TO MAINT TO SEE IF THEY COULD FIX THE PACK (DUE TO PAX COMFORT). UPON CHKING THE DEFERRAL ONCE AGAIN, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE (B) SECTION OF THE DEFERRAL WAS FOR THE L PACK AND NOT THE R PACK. WE DETERMINED THE WRONG PACK HAD BEEN DEFERRED AND MAINT WAS NOTIFIED SO THEY COULD FIX THE PROB. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 620919: IN HINDSIGHT, I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE VIGILANT IN READING THE DEFERRAL. WHEN WE RPTED TO THE ACFT, IT WAS VERY HOT, WE WERE TRYING TO COOL IT DOWN FOR THE PAX, AND IT DIDN'T OCCUR TO ME THAT MAINT WOULD INSPECT 1 PACK AND THEN DEFER THE OTHER IN ERROR.
