Narrative:

Cleared for the elk lake visual approach to runway 9. My first officer rebriefed the visual approach, briefing to include changes specific to the elk lake visual. He proceeded to descend to 3000 ft as specified on the commercial chart applying to all the visual approachs (5) shown on that plate. We determined later (after landing), there is a 3500 ft restr until lake shawnigan in small print applying to the visual approachs from the south. I spoke to victoria terminal on the phone and they said they've had several 'occurrences,' both pilot and controller, involving these fairly new visual approach procedures. I offered and did phone our airline safety line and chief pilot's office to spread the word. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter advised that this was his first effort in conducting this approach procedure. Reporter advised that the cyyj visual approach procedures, runway 9, were 'published within the yr.' reporter advised company of problem incurred and action has been taken to alert other company flight crews of the 'hidden' restr. Reporter stated that company will notify their commercial chart provider and will recommend the restr be moved from its present location and be 'written along the base leg arc' to alert the pilot of the restr. The reporter suggests the restr become a part of the narrative of the elk lake and downtown visual approach rtes.

Title: DHC8 FLT CREW'S OVERSIGHT OF ALT RESTR DEPICTED IN THE CYYJ VISUAL APCH CHART PLAN VIEW AREA FOR RWY 9 RESULTS IN AN ALT OVERSHOOT WHEN TURNING FROM DOWNWIND TO BASE LEG, PRIOR TO INTERCEPTING FINAL AT 6 DME.

Narrative: CLRED FOR THE ELK LAKE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 9. MY FO REBRIEFED THE VISUAL APCH, BRIEFING TO INCLUDE CHANGES SPECIFIC TO THE ELK LAKE VISUAL. HE PROCEEDED TO DSND TO 3000 FT AS SPECIFIED ON THE COMMERCIAL CHART APPLYING TO ALL THE VISUAL APCHS (5) SHOWN ON THAT PLATE. WE DETERMINED LATER (AFTER LNDG), THERE IS A 3500 FT RESTR UNTIL LAKE SHAWNIGAN IN SMALL PRINT APPLYING TO THE VISUAL APCHS FROM THE S. I SPOKE TO VICTORIA TERMINAL ON THE PHONE AND THEY SAID THEY'VE HAD SEVERAL 'OCCURRENCES,' BOTH PLT AND CTLR, INVOLVING THESE FAIRLY NEW VISUAL APCH PROCS. I OFFERED AND DID PHONE OUR AIRLINE SAFETY LINE AND CHIEF PLT'S OFFICE TO SPREAD THE WORD. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR ADVISED THAT THIS WAS HIS FIRST EFFORT IN CONDUCTING THIS APCH PROC. RPTR ADVISED THAT THE CYYJ VISUAL APCH PROCS, RWY 9, WERE 'PUBLISHED WITHIN THE YR.' RPTR ADVISED COMPANY OF PROB INCURRED AND ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN TO ALERT OTHER COMPANY FLT CREWS OF THE 'HIDDEN' RESTR. RPTR STATED THAT COMPANY WILL NOTIFY THEIR COMMERCIAL CHART PROVIDER AND WILL RECOMMEND THE RESTR BE MOVED FROM ITS PRESENT LOCATION AND BE 'WRITTEN ALONG THE BASE LEG ARC' TO ALERT THE PLT OF THE RESTR. THE RPTR SUGGESTS THE RESTR BECOME A PART OF THE NARRATIVE OF THE ELK LAKE AND DOWNTOWN VISUAL APCH RTES.
