Narrative:

On downwind, radar vectors with approach control. We were in light rain, light ride ice, radar returns precipitation only. Smooth rime when we were hit in the radome by lightning. A terrific boom and flash that temporarily blinded myself and the first officer. There was a smell of smoke and ozone in the cockpit with several EICAS messages of anomalies. The strike caused the radar screen to glow bright pink. Several lights burned out and our left yaw dampner disconnected. We assessed the situation and I declared an emergency to get expedited handling not knowing how many electronic system might be compromised. The flight level mode of the autoplt (which had stayed engaged) was inoperative, so the first officer (PF) used vertical speed. We divided the workload and I took the QRH and accomplished the abnormal checklists, calmed the very concerned passenger (some of whom were concerned that we had been struck by an object) and coordinated time remaining, type of landing, actions on the ground, etc. The first officer flew and communicated with ATC. This system of division of labor works very well indeed. Approach and tower performed flawlessly and we turned in early, flew a smooth stabilized approach and the first officer executed a very smooth landing. Emergency personnel checked the aircraft for visible damage or fire and we taxied into the gate under our own power. Aircraft is down for maintenance.

Title: B757 FLT CREW DECLARES AN EMER AFTER MULTIPLE SYS FAILURES CAUSED BY A LIGHTNING STRIKE ON APCH TO SLC.

Narrative: ON DOWNWIND, RADAR VECTORS WITH APCH CTL. WE WERE IN LIGHT RAIN, LIGHT RIDE ICE, RADAR RETURNS PRECIPITATION ONLY. SMOOTH RIME WHEN WE WERE HIT IN THE RADOME BY LIGHTNING. A TERRIFIC BOOM AND FLASH THAT TEMPORARILY BLINDED MYSELF AND THE FO. THERE WAS A SMELL OF SMOKE AND OZONE IN THE COCKPIT WITH SEVERAL EICAS MESSAGES OF ANOMALIES. THE STRIKE CAUSED THE RADAR SCREEN TO GLOW BRIGHT PINK. SEVERAL LIGHTS BURNED OUT AND OUR L YAW DAMPNER DISCONNECTED. WE ASSESSED THE SIT AND I DECLARED AN EMER TO GET EXPEDITED HANDLING NOT KNOWING HOW MANY ELECTRONIC SYS MIGHT BE COMPROMISED. THE FLT LEVEL MODE OF THE AUTOPLT (WHICH HAD STAYED ENGAGED) WAS INOP, SO THE FO (PF) USED VERT SPD. WE DIVIDED THE WORKLOAD AND I TOOK THE QRH AND ACCOMPLISHED THE ABNORMAL CHKLISTS, CALMED THE VERY CONCERNED PAX (SOME OF WHOM WERE CONCERNED THAT WE HAD BEEN STRUCK BY AN OBJECT) AND COORDINATED TIME REMAINING, TYPE OF LNDG, ACTIONS ON THE GND, ETC. THE FO FLEW AND COMMUNICATED WITH ATC. THIS SYS OF DIVISION OF LABOR WORKS VERY WELL INDEED. APCH AND TWR PERFORMED FLAWLESSLY AND WE TURNED IN EARLY, FLEW A SMOOTH STABILIZED APCH AND THE FO EXECUTED A VERY SMOOTH LNDG. EMER PERSONNEL CHKED THE ACFT FOR VISIBLE DAMAGE OR FIRE AND WE TAXIED INTO THE GATE UNDER OUR OWN PWR. ACFT IS DOWN FOR MAINT.
