Altitude and heading was assigned at the same time. Heading assigned 160 degrees was mistook for altitude 16000 ft. Passing through 14000 ft, called center to confirm 16000 ft. Center reply altitude was 13000 ft and heading 160 degrees -- no conflict. Immediately cleared to FL230 direct NAVAID and frequency change.

Narrative: ALT AND HDG WAS ASSIGNED AT THE SAME TIME. HDG ASSIGNED 160 DEGS WAS MISTOOK FOR ALT 16000 FT. PASSING THROUGH 14000 FT, CALLED CTR TO CONFIRM 16000 FT. CTR REPLY ALT WAS 13000 FT AND HDG 160 DEGS -- NO CONFLICT. IMMEDIATELY CLRED TO FL230 DIRECT NAVAID AND FREQ CHANGE.
