Narrative:

Departed smo. Takeoff roll was normal. At positive rate of climb, I called for gear up. Gear was retracted, but we had a red light flashing in the gear handle and the sound of slapping coming from the front nose area. We diverted to vny, but first burnt fuel to meet landing weight requirements. As we crossed over into the san fernando valley, the red light went out and the slapping sound stopped. I asked for the gear down and we got 3 green lights and no red lights. We made a pass by vny tower to have them look at our gear and they said everything looked good. We entered a downwind for runway 34L and landed without any problem. We parked the plane and inspected the nose gear area and found scuff marks and the outside of the nose doors and paint missing from the right door. Doors would not stay in the up position and had to be adjusted to stay up. I feel that we picked up something on the takeoff roll at smo and it got stuck up in the gear doors and became dislodged later in the flight.
