Narrative:

We had taxied in and were told to hold at spot for our gate. Brakes were parked and we were behind the number far enough I could see it over the nose of my aircraft. Another flight pwred back off of a gate in front of us, and came dangerously close to impacting my aircraft. The first officer and I both grabbed our mikes and were almost yelling for aircraft to go forward when we saw the buckets retract and the rate slow to a stop only ft away from us. Obviously, the crew had no clue how close they were and the ground walkers didn't either, nor did they appear to care. All they were watching were the wingtips! I can't believe in this era of fuel conservation, we still power back at dfw. It was almost more than excessive fuel burn. When I power back at dfw, there are ground vehicles swarming in front of the aircraft as soon as I stop and it's obviously a safety hazard. I feel it's only a matter of time until there's an incident which could have been avoided.
