Narrative:

Cleared to runway 9L via taxiway P. Exited ramp, saw taxiway P sign and runway 9. Thought I turned onto taxiway P, but was on taxiway P already and turned on taxiway south. The sign I saw for runway 9 was runway 9R, not runway 9L. Had mental picture that I would parallel a runway to runway 9L. Things did not look right as there was a runway straight ahead. Did not look right to me as we shouldn't be crossing runway 12 on way to runway 9L. Copilot verbalized it also, and ground also caught it. We turned right onto taxiway Q, another right, and then left, back on taxiway P. There was no other traffic around. I obviously made wrong turn but the system worked as myself, the first officer, and ground control all caught error. I always have my airport diagram out, but still made an error. My initial error was seeing sign for runway 9R and thinking that was runway 9L where I was going. I always try to have a mental picture of where I am going, but made an error this time. I don't regularly go to this airport, but I have been there many times before and shouldn't have made this mistake. Keep up the good work. Everyone is more aware than in the past through education. An error can occur any day, but as long as we have xchks, ie, PF, ATC, and our own inner feelings, we can avoid a bad outcome.

Title: A B767 FLT CREW INADVERTENTLY TAXI ON THE WRONG TXWY AT MIA.

Narrative: CLRED TO RWY 9L VIA TXWY P. EXITED RAMP, SAW TXWY P SIGN AND RWY 9. THOUGHT I TURNED ONTO TXWY P, BUT WAS ON TXWY P ALREADY AND TURNED ON TXWY S. THE SIGN I SAW FOR RWY 9 WAS RWY 9R, NOT RWY 9L. HAD MENTAL PICTURE THAT I WOULD PARALLEL A RWY TO RWY 9L. THINGS DID NOT LOOK RIGHT AS THERE WAS A RWY STRAIGHT AHEAD. DID NOT LOOK RIGHT TO ME AS WE SHOULDN'T BE XING RWY 12 ON WAY TO RWY 9L. COPLT VERBALIZED IT ALSO, AND GND ALSO CAUGHT IT. WE TURNED R ONTO TXWY Q, ANOTHER R, AND THEN L, BACK ON TXWY P. THERE WAS NO OTHER TFC AROUND. I OBVIOUSLY MADE WRONG TURN BUT THE SYS WORKED AS MYSELF, THE FO, AND GND CTL ALL CAUGHT ERROR. I ALWAYS HAVE MY ARPT DIAGRAM OUT, BUT STILL MADE AN ERROR. MY INITIAL ERROR WAS SEEING SIGN FOR RWY 9R AND THINKING THAT WAS RWY 9L WHERE I WAS GOING. I ALWAYS TRY TO HAVE A MENTAL PICTURE OF WHERE I AM GOING, BUT MADE AN ERROR THIS TIME. I DON'T REGULARLY GO TO THIS ARPT, BUT I HAVE BEEN THERE MANY TIMES BEFORE AND SHOULDN'T HAVE MADE THIS MISTAKE.
