Narrative:

In cruise nearing phx, I went to use the lavatory. By the time I returned and got plugged back in, abq was rudely asking us to listen up for radio calls as we apparently had missed 5 calls. 2 issues: 1) first is the amount of distraction it creates to leave the cockpit. I feel that this is what caused the captain to miss the calls. 2) second issue is the rudeness of the ZAB controller, who maybe wasn't as professional as he could have been. As far as securing the cockpit, maybe removable netting between the windbreak and the galley would do the trick.
