Narrative:

At ord we were cleared to taxi to runway 22L. While holding short of the runway, the tower cleared us to fly runway heading, cleared for takeoff. We taxied onto the runway with the power advancing for takeoff. I cleared the runway 22L approach path as I turned the corner onto the runway. I then cleared the runway 27L approach path and was surprised to see a conflicting aircraft on short final to runway 27L. It was too late to do anything other than continue the takeoff on runway 22L. Tower noticed the conflict and sent the runway 27L landing traffic around. At no time did tower mention the traffic on runway 27L, nor did he tell us to expedite our takeoff. Our taxi onto runway 22L and rolling takeoff was not slow and would be considered a normal initiation of takeoff. Also, at approximately 100 KTS tower stated, 'air carrier X, you know you cannot have aircraft overfly you on runway 22L.' this rhetorical comment was totally inappropriate for our critical phase of flight and did nothing to contribute to the safety of the situation. Supplemental information from acn 602973: I noticed that there appeared to be an aircraft on final for runway 27L. The captain and I took a moment to determine where the aircraft was headed. As I was about to query the tower, the tower told the aircraft to go around, which it promptly did. We continued our takeoff roll and the tower told us that we should know that aircraft landing on runway 27L cannot overfly an aircraft on runway 22L.

Title: MD80 DEP FROM ORD EXPERIENCED CLOSE CALL WITH ARR ON INTERSECTING RWY.

Narrative: AT ORD WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 22L. WHILE HOLDING SHORT OF THE RWY, THE TWR CLRED US TO FLY RWY HEADING, CLRED FOR TKOF. WE TAXIED ONTO THE RWY WITH THE PWR ADVANCING FOR TKOF. I CLRED THE RWY 22L APCH PATH AS I TURNED THE CORNER ONTO THE RWY. I THEN CLRED THE RWY 27L APCH PATH AND WAS SURPRISED TO SEE A CONFLICTING ACFT ON SHORT FINAL TO RWY 27L. IT WAS TOO LATE TO DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN CONTINUE THE TKOF ON RWY 22L. TWR NOTICED THE CONFLICT AND SENT THE RWY 27L LNDG TFC AROUND. AT NO TIME DID TWR MENTION THE TFC ON RWY 27L, NOR DID HE TELL US TO EXPEDITE OUR TKOF. OUR TAXI ONTO RWY 22L AND ROLLING TKOF WAS NOT SLOW AND WOULD BE CONSIDERED A NORMAL INITIATION OF TKOF. ALSO, AT APPROX 100 KTS TWR STATED, 'ACR X, YOU KNOW YOU CANNOT HAVE ACFT OVERFLY YOU ON RWY 22L.' THIS RHETORICAL COMMENT WAS TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE FOR OUR CRITICAL PHASE OF FLT AND DID NOTHING TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE SAFETY OF THE SIT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 602973: I NOTICED THAT THERE APPEARED TO BE AN ACFT ON FINAL FOR RWY 27L. THE CAPT AND I TOOK A MOMENT TO DETERMINE WHERE THE ACFT WAS HEADED. AS I WAS ABOUT TO QUERY THE TWR, THE TWR TOLD THE ACFT TO GO AROUND, WHICH IT PROMPTLY DID. WE CONTINUED OUR TKOF ROLL AND THE TWR TOLD US THAT WE SHOULD KNOW THAT ACFT LNDG ON RWY 27L CANNOT OVERFLY AN ACFT ON RWY 22L.
