Narrative:

Departing saf on the ZAISE2 departure the SID called for an intercept of the saf 255 degree radial to join the departure. This turn was missed and the captain continued on runway heading of 200 degrees and a climb to 10000 ft MSL. After passing the required turn ZAB advised us of the missed turn and issued a turn to 250 degrees and climb to 12000 ft for terrain. Remainder of flight was uneventful. Events that I feel contributed to this situation stem from the captain (PF) not understanding the ATC clearance and SID which he received from saf tower and subsequently briefed me in error. The initial clearance included the departure SID, but to join V263 to abq. The captain briefed me on the SID, but he said the clearance was to join V263 south of zaise intersection to abq probably due in part that on the SID the 255 degree radial from saf to zaise intersection is not labeled as V263. Regardless, the SID does state to intercept the 255 degree radial from saf, and the captain did not reference the low altitude chart to verify the makeup of V263. I did question this clearance in the takeoff briefing due to my concerns of flying in mountainous terrain. The captain then stated to me that it was radar vectors after the runway heading to join the V263 south of zaise intersection. This was apparently wrong and his full understanding of the clearance was flawed from the beginning, but was relayed to me in error as well. This event I think stems from complacency of a 'sea level' pilot not fully understanding the need to be error free in flying in mountainous terrain. The captain thought he was right in his understanding of the clearance and I had a gut feeling that it was wrong, but let my trust in the captain and his understanding of the clearance win. A contributing factor is the labeling on the SID itself. V263 and V62 are labeled but the 255 degree radial should be labeled as well as V263 for reference, but is not. Also, the controller issuing the clearance should reference only the SID in the IFR clearance and avoid the use of the V263 intercept. I also should trust my instincts when any clearance is in doubt, and when in doubt ask and verify from ATC what is exactly expected of us.

REGARDLESS, THE SID DOES STATE TO INTERCEPT THE 255 DEG RADIAL FROM SAF, AND THE CAPT DID NOT REF THE LOW ALT CHART TO VERIFY THE MAKEUP OF V263. I DID QUESTION THIS CLRNC IN THE TKOF BRIEFING DUE TO MY CONCERNS OF FLYING IN MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN. THE CAPT THEN STATED TO ME THAT IT WAS RADAR VECTORS AFTER THE RWY HEADING TO JOIN THE V263 S OF ZAISE INTXN. THIS WAS APPARENTLY WRONG AND HIS FULL UNDERSTANDING OF THE CLRNC WAS FLAWED FROM THE BEGINNING, BUT WAS RELAYED TO ME IN ERROR AS WELL. THIS EVENT I THINK STEMS FROM COMPLACENCY OF A 'SEA LEVEL' PLT NOT FULLY UNDERSTANDING THE NEED TO BE ERROR FREE IN FLYING IN MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN. THE CAPT THOUGHT HE WAS RIGHT IN HIS UNDERSTANDING OF THE CLRNC AND I HAD A GUT FEELING THAT IT WAS WRONG, BUT LET MY TRUST IN THE CAPT AND HIS UNDERSTANDING OF THE CLRNC WIN. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IS THE LABELING ON THE SID ITSELF. V263 AND V62 ARE LABELED BUT THE 255 DEG RADIAL SHOULD BE LABELED AS WELL AS V263 FOR REF, BUT IS NOT. ALSO, THE CTLR ISSUING THE CLRNC SHOULD REF ONLY THE SID IN THE IFR CLRNC AND AVOID THE USE OF THE V263 INTERCEPT. I ALSO SHOULD TRUST MY INSTINCTS WHEN ANY CLRNC IS IN DOUBT, AND WHEN IN DOUBT ASK AND VERIFY FROM ATC WHAT IS EXACTLY EXPECTED OF US.
