Narrative:

Departed dyl at XA50 EDT, flew intended route and altitudes. Remained clear of washington class B. Contacted richmond (potomac) approach for transition through class C to chesterfield country airport. During transition, richmond approach gave me phone number to call upon landing for possible flight deviation. Arrived fci chesterfield county approximately XC35. Immediately after landing I called the phone number and got potomac approach control. They asked for my name, address and phone number. When I inquired as why they needed that information, I was told that I have had flown into the washington ADIZ. I was totally shocked by the news and tried to figure out how that was possible, to my knowledge I was nowhere near the washington ADIZ zone -- which on my sectional chart and the washington terminal area chart was approximately a 14 NM radius of the washington VOR. I politely gave them my information as well as my pilot certificate number. After some time of disbelief, I called my flight instructor and told him what had happened. I explained to him my route of flight and altitudes, and flight briefing, and asked him to investigate what I possibly could have done. I had the latest charts, and obtained what I thought was a detailed and complete briefing prior to the flight. The following day he called me back telling me that I had indeed flown through the washington ADIZ, which had been extended out to an approximately 30 NM radius and that I should have asked for published NOTAMS in my preflight briefing. Even though I asked for tfr's and NOTAMS, I did not specifically ask for published NOTAMS. We spoke at length regarding the correct procedure for the return flight and future flts in that area. Since then, we have had numerous discussions regarding this unfortunate incident, so that the same mistake is not repeated. I have taken the 'know before you go' online program and completed the quiz following. Bottom line is that I take full responsibility for my error. I apologize for my actions and that my actions distraction people from their important work to deal with my infringement in this protected airspace. I have already taken many steps to avoid this ever happening again.

Title: UNAUTH AIRSPACE ENTRY WHEN A VFR C182 PVT PLT FAILS TO ADVISE PCT APCH CTLR PRIOR TO ENTERING THE AIRSPACE AT DC ADIZ, DC.

Narrative: DEPARTED DYL AT XA50 EDT, FLEW INTENDED RTE AND ALTS. REMAINED CLR OF WASHINGTON CLASS B. CONTACTED RICHMOND (POTOMAC) APCH FOR TRANSITION THROUGH CLASS C TO CHESTERFIELD COUNTRY ARPT. DURING TRANSITION, RICHMOND APCH GAVE ME PHONE NUMBER TO CALL UPON LNDG FOR POSSIBLE FLT DEV. ARRIVED FCI CHESTERFIELD COUNTY APPROX XC35. IMMEDIATELY AFTER LNDG I CALLED THE PHONE NUMBER AND GOT POTOMAC APCH CTL. THEY ASKED FOR MY NAME, ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER. WHEN I INQUIRED AS WHY THEY NEEDED THAT INFO, I WAS TOLD THAT I HAVE HAD FLOWN INTO THE WASHINGTON ADIZ. I WAS TOTALLY SHOCKED BY THE NEWS AND TRIED TO FIGURE OUT HOW THAT WAS POSSIBLE, TO MY KNOWLEDGE I WAS NOWHERE NEAR THE WASHINGTON ADIZ ZONE -- WHICH ON MY SECTIONAL CHART AND THE WASHINGTON TERMINAL AREA CHART WAS APPROX A 14 NM RADIUS OF THE WASHINGTON VOR. I POLITELY GAVE THEM MY INFO AS WELL AS MY PLT CERTIFICATE NUMBER. AFTER SOME TIME OF DISBELIEF, I CALLED MY FLT INSTRUCTOR AND TOLD HIM WHAT HAD HAPPENED. I EXPLAINED TO HIM MY RTE OF FLT AND ALTS, AND FLT BRIEFING, AND ASKED HIM TO INVESTIGATE WHAT I POSSIBLY COULD HAVE DONE. I HAD THE LATEST CHARTS, AND OBTAINED WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A DETAILED AND COMPLETE BRIEFING PRIOR TO THE FLT. THE FOLLOWING DAY HE CALLED ME BACK TELLING ME THAT I HAD INDEED FLOWN THROUGH THE WASHINGTON ADIZ, WHICH HAD BEEN EXTENDED OUT TO AN APPROX 30 NM RADIUS AND THAT I SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR PUBLISHED NOTAMS IN MY PREFLT BRIEFING. EVEN THOUGH I ASKED FOR TFR'S AND NOTAMS, I DID NOT SPECIFICALLY ASK FOR PUBLISHED NOTAMS. WE SPOKE AT LENGTH REGARDING THE CORRECT PROC FOR THE RETURN FLT AND FUTURE FLTS IN THAT AREA. I APOLOGIZE FOR MY ACTIONS AND THAT MY ACTIONS DISTR PEOPLE FROM THEIR IMPORTANT WORK TO DEAL WITH MY INFRINGEMENT IN THIS PROTECTED AIRSPACE. I HAVE ALREADY TAKEN MANY STEPS TO AVOID THIS EVER HAPPENING AGAIN.
