Narrative:

Long line for takeoff. Due to our edict we were given clearance to go to front of departure line. A DC9 was #1 and was very close to departure end. Tower asked if we had enough room to bypass the DC9, which we did and we acknowledged so. As captain was taxiing around the DC9 and looking to ensure wingtip clearance, he thought a position and hold was given. As we approached hold short line, at the same time the female first officer in the DC9 said 'stop aircraft X' over the radio. Captain abruptly stopped airplane with nosewheel estimated just before hold short, but radome was over. Aircraft was landing runway 30R at the time, and was on about 1 mi final when this occurred. Aircraft landed and our plane was cleared into position. Flight progressed normally from then on. Tower said nothing regarding our hold short position.
