Narrative:

On approach into san we were descending to the assigned altitude of 4000 ft on a vector to the localizer runway 27 approach course when we heard 'terrain, terrain' on ground proximity warning system. We were IMC, so therefore we executed an immediate escape from 4000 ft to 4500 ft to get above the clouds to ensure terrain clearance. We notified ATC and cancelled the approach and were vectored for a new localizer runway 27 approach to runway 27.
