Narrative:
I received a clearance to deviate around thunderstorms from ZAB 125.4. Out of FL200 we could fly a 275 degree heading till able direct bball. At around 12000 ft the controller asked us why we were not going direct bball. I told her we were still deviating around WX. She said we were not cleared to do so. There were no traffic conflicts that I know of.

Narrative: I RECEIVED A CLRNC TO DEVIATE AROUND TSTMS FROM ZAB 125.4. OUT OF FL200 WE COULD FLY A 275 DEG HDG TILL ABLE DIRECT BBALL. AT AROUND 12000 FT THE CTLR ASKED US WHY WE WERE NOT GOING DIRECT BBALL. I TOLD HER WE WERE STILL DEVIATING AROUND WX. SHE SAID WE WERE NOT CLRED TO DO SO. THERE WERE NO TFC CONFLICTS THAT I KNOW OF.
