Following an approach in visual conditions, flight crew of MD80 advised by stl tower upon landing on runway 12L that they had failed to comply with the requirements of the lda runway 12L approach after being cleared to land and to maintain visual separation from aircraft making simultaneous approach to runway 12R.

Narrative:
When cleared to land on runway 12L and maintain visual with traffic for runway 12R inside 6 DME, we aligned on runway 12L. Tower called after landing to inform us that we had not been cleared for a visual to runway 12L and we should have stayed on the lda until 3 DME.
