Narrative:

We were holding short of runway 5 on taxiway F. Clt tower cleared us on to hold. After our aircraft completely crossed the hold line, the tower told us to hold short. We replied that were already past the hold line. We requested 2 more times if the tower wanted us to taxi clear. Since an aircraft was on a 3 mile final, we elected on our own to get off the active runway. The tower then cleared us for an immediate takeoff, we declined and stayed off the runway. The aircraft on final was sent around. Tower told us the confusion was because they had an indication that another aircraft was over the hold line on taxiway golf and runway 5. A truck was sent out to verify. The runway was confirmed clear and we were cleared for takeoff.
