Narrative:

During the climb out from punta cana, dominican republic, we were given clearance to FL330, which was read back and entered into altitude alert window. Passing FL320, santo domingo center, who had issued the clearance, told us our altitude was FL310. We stopped climb at FL323, and immediately descended to FL310. We stated we understood FL330, and controller said he issued FL310. There was no conflict, and no other traffic involved. Controller spoke good english, but had an accent, especially with numbers. We will pay closer attention in the future.
