250 KT in climb (captain PF) at approximately 12000 ft. ATC assigns normal speed. Captain (PF) lowering and trimming nose down for speed increase to 290 KTS. Nose pitching farther than required. Trim warbler (excessive trim) sounds. PF complies with immediate action memory items, calls for QRH. QRH compiled with. Contact company dispatch and maintenance. Jointly agree to return to ZZZ. Advise maintenance of overweight landing and complied with necessary company paper upon return. Landing uneventful no emergency declared. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter states the cause of the excessive rate and amount of pitch trim is unknown as maintenance does not report the action taken to the flight crews.
