C402 pilot getting a company checkout with an instructor pilot, forgot to lower the landing gear when conducting a single engine landing. The pilots and the ATCT local controller discovered the gear was not extended at the same time. The tower controller issued a warning and gave the aircraft a go around.

Narrative:

During my first familiarization/training flight in this make and model aircraft, the company instructor pilot simulated a right engine failure after takeoff we completed the simulated engine failure checklist and simulating engine shutdown. I concentrated on maintaining control and flying the landing pattern at appropriate airspeeds. Upon approaching the flare for a simulated single engine landing, I realized the landing gear was not down so I initiated a rejected landing at the same time that the tower controller commanded a 'go around.' there was no damage to the airplane or property, but there was considerable damage to the pride of 2 highly experienced aviators. Lesson learned: you are never so experienced that you can relax your guard against complacency.
