Narrative:

After long maintenance delay during taxi out right engine start at fuel lever on. Lost duct pressure, got hung start. Discontinued start with fuel lever off and motor for 30 seconds. Flight attendant reported smell of smoke in cabin and smoke from right engine tailpipe. Returned to gate, but could not raise operations for gate assignment. Informed tower we may need emergency equipment to stand by if we don't get a gate soon. Although a PA was made to be calm and remain in seats, was aware that passenger may start evacuate/evacuation. Tower assigned gate and another flight told park crew on his headset that we needed park assist. Agents came running and parked us without further problem. Smoke cleared and all passenger deplane to terminal.
