Narrative:

Long beach ground control cleared my aircraft from FBO via txwys B and J to runway 25L for a midfield departure. Since the layout of long beach is extensive, I pulled my commercial airport diagram and taxied via taxiway J to the hold bar runway 25L on taxiway J. I then contacted tower and let them know I was ready for takeoff at the hold bar runway 25L on taxiway J. The controller said taxi to, hold short of runway 25L, landing traffic a piper. The hold bars at taxiway J for runway 25L are several (100 ft) from runway 25L, I rolled forward over the hold bars looking for the hold bars nearer runway 25L, when I saw there were no hold bars in front of me. I stopped (my aircraft was sitting on top of and slightly ahead of the hold bars). I was at least 60-100 ft from the runway 25L. The controller told me to make an immediate 180 degrees and get that plane back. He then had the piper on final go around. The controller then requested me to call the tower when I landed at my destination. I contacted the tower at about XA00, jun/thu/03. I explained to the controller that I was somewhat confused with the comment taxi to, hold short of runway 25L. I was already at the hold bars for runway 25L, and I thought he wanted me to move forward to the next set of bars, which I realized were not there as I rolled forward. The controller said that there is never a time you roll past the hold bars unless you are cleared. I thought he had cleared me to the next set of hold bars. The controller then stated he was filing an incident report.

Title: PA34 PLT MISUNDERSTANDS LGB CTLR AND TAXIES ACROSS HOLD SHORT LINES TO AN IMAGINED POS SHORT OF THE RWY. ACFT ON FINAL ISSUED A GAR.

Narrative: LONG BEACH GND CTL CLRED MY ACFT FROM FBO VIA TXWYS B AND J TO RWY 25L FOR A MIDFIELD DEP. SINCE THE LAYOUT OF LONG BEACH IS EXTENSIVE, I PULLED MY COMMERCIAL ARPT DIAGRAM AND TAXIED VIA TXWY J TO THE HOLD BAR RWY 25L ON TXWY J. I THEN CONTACTED TWR AND LET THEM KNOW I WAS READY FOR TKOF AT THE HOLD BAR RWY 25L ON TXWY J. THE CTLR SAID TAXI TO, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 25L, LNDG TFC A PIPER. THE HOLD BARS AT TXWY J FOR RWY 25L ARE SEVERAL (100 FT) FROM RWY 25L, I ROLLED FORWARD OVER THE HOLD BARS LOOKING FOR THE HOLD BARS NEARER RWY 25L, WHEN I SAW THERE WERE NO HOLD BARS IN FRONT OF ME. I STOPPED (MY ACFT WAS SITTING ON TOP OF AND SLIGHTLY AHEAD OF THE HOLD BARS). I WAS AT LEAST 60-100 FT FROM THE RWY 25L. THE CTLR TOLD ME TO MAKE AN IMMEDIATE 180 DEGS AND GET THAT PLANE BACK. HE THEN HAD THE PIPER ON FINAL GO AROUND. THE CTLR THEN REQUESTED ME TO CALL THE TWR WHEN I LANDED AT MY DEST. I CONTACTED THE TWR AT ABOUT XA00, JUN/THU/03. I EXPLAINED TO THE CTLR THAT I WAS SOMEWHAT CONFUSED WITH THE COMMENT TAXI TO, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 25L. I WAS ALREADY AT THE HOLD BARS FOR RWY 25L, AND I THOUGHT HE WANTED ME TO MOVE FORWARD TO THE NEXT SET OF BARS, WHICH I REALIZED WERE NOT THERE AS I ROLLED FORWARD. THE CTLR SAID THAT THERE IS NEVER A TIME YOU ROLL PAST THE HOLD BARS UNLESS YOU ARE CLRED. I THOUGHT HE HAD CLRED ME TO THE NEXT SET OF HOLD BARS. THE CTLR THEN STATED HE WAS FILING AN INCIDENT RPT.
