Narrative:

During flight from cmh to lga while with new york approach control an ATC miscom occurred. The first officer was the PF and the captain was the PNF. When we checked in with new york approach they told us to expedite descent to 4000 ft and turn left 080 degrees. The first officer initiated the descent and turned the aircraft. The captain then gave ATC radio duties to the first officer and he called company. During the descent new york again told us to descend to 4000 ft. The first officer responded to the radio call. As we approached the varazono bridge captain commented that it looked like we were going to jfk. Then a second controller called us to turn left 020 degrees and 3000 ft and scolded us and told us we were given direct lga 6 mi earlier. Captain responded with new clearance and ok to 6 mi comment. First officer and captain discussed ATC clearance and first officer did not hear direct lga in earlier ATC transmission. We complied with all altitude clrncs. Supplemental information from acn 583388: I told the first officer to take ATC #1 radio while I would contact lga operations on #2 communication radio to inform them that our flight attendant had just told us that we need a wheelchair upon arrival. After doing so, I resumed ATC communication duties. My first officer who had 20 yrs with military, did not recall ATC telling us to proceed to lga in an earlier transmission.
