Narrative:

After initial climb, we leveled at 6000 ft. Upon trying to trim the airplane for level flight, the pitch trim was unresponsive with a nose down or 'nose heavy' condition. The pitch trim indication was wavering between 1.8 and 2.4. The pitch condition of the airplane seemed stable. An emergency was declared, the QRH for stabilizer trim failure was completed, and a reduced flaps landing was successfully made. It should be noted that none of the system failure messages were displayed. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated at no time during this incident did the EICAS system display any system failure messages. The reporter said maintenance replaced the motor control unit and both actuators on the jackscrew and repaired the wiring on the captains yoke.

Narrative: AFTER INITIAL CLB, WE LEVELED AT 6000 FT. UPON TRYING TO TRIM THE AIRPLANE FOR LEVEL FLT, THE PITCH TRIM WAS UNRESPONSIVE WITH A NOSE DOWN OR 'NOSE HEAVY' CONDITION.
