Narrative:

After pushing back and accomplishing the pre-takeoff checklist, we received clearance to taxi to runway 33 in burbank. As I taxied out, I noticed what I thought were 2 sets of hold short lines for runway 33. I initially thought the set of lines close to the runway were the ones I needed to observe. However, my first officer asked me if I was going to stop. Therefore, I did stop and thanked him for catching me. While we sat there, we discussed the fact that the taxi line continued forward and turned prior to the second set of lines I referenced above. In hindsight, I believe the second set of lines were non-movement lines (1 yellow line with 1 dashed line behind rather than 2 yellow lines with 2 dashed lines behind). In any case, it is easy to understand why we were confused. After we both discussed the ambiguity, we thought it was proper to proceed. I checked for traffic on the runway (there was an aircraft holding short for departure on runway 15) and proceeded past the hold short lines following the taxi line. Ground control immediately asked what our intentions were, then told us to contact tower. Tower instructed us to reposition the aircraft back to the hold short lines. In retrospect, we should have clarified the ambiguity with ground. In our defense, this situation is very misleading and should be annotated more clearly or rectified in some other fashion. Supporting information: burbank is a very unique airport concerning the close proximity of txwys to the runway. In fact, if an aircraft taxiing adjacent to runway 8 is not on the centerline, its wing encroaches onto runway 8. This is the first time I had a landing or takeoff in burbank using runway 33. The route from our gate to runway 33 appeared to be of the same proximity as the taxi route adjacent to runway 8. In addition, while our gate area is in a non-movement area, the ground controller still controls ground movement on the taxi line adjacent to runway 8. In addition, note of the departure section of bur states: for runway 33 departures, tower may hold you adjacent to gate. Be sure to taxi to end of runway to ensure safe takeoff. Also my first officer had noted a ground controller telling another air carrier departing runway 33 prior to us to 'hold short of the second set of hold short lines.

Title: B737 CROSSED HOLD LINE WHILE TAXIING FOR DEP AT BUR.

Narrative: AFTER PUSHING BACK AND ACCOMPLISHING THE PRE-TKOF CHKLIST, WE RECEIVED CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 33 IN BURBANK. AS I TAXIED OUT, I NOTICED WHAT I THOUGHT WERE 2 SETS OF HOLD SHORT LINES FOR RWY 33. I INITIALLY THOUGHT THE SET OF LINES CLOSE TO THE RWY WERE THE ONES I NEEDED TO OBSERVE. HOWEVER, MY FO ASKED ME IF I WAS GOING TO STOP. THEREFORE, I DID STOP AND THANKED HIM FOR CATCHING ME. WHILE WE SAT THERE, WE DISCUSSED THE FACT THAT THE TAXI LINE CONTINUED FORWARD AND TURNED PRIOR TO THE SECOND SET OF LINES I REFED ABOVE. I CHKED FOR TFC ON THE RWY (THERE WAS AN ACFT HOLDING SHORT FOR DEP ON RWY 15) AND PROCEEDED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINES FOLLOWING THE TAXI LINE. GND CTL IMMEDIATELY ASKED WHAT OUR INTENTIONS WERE, THEN TOLD US TO CONTACT TWR. TWR INSTRUCTED US TO REPOSITION THE ACFT BACK TO THE HOLD SHORT LINES. IN RETROSPECT, WE SHOULD HAVE CLARIFIED THE AMBIGUITY WITH GND. IN OUR DEFENSE, THIS SIT IS VERY MISLEADING AND SHOULD BE ANNOTATED MORE CLRLY OR RECTIFIED IN SOME OTHER FASHION. SUPPORTING INFO: BURBANK IS A VERY UNIQUE ARPT CONCERNING THE CLOSE PROX OF TXWYS TO THE RWY. IN FACT, IF AN ACFT TAXIING ADJACENT TO RWY 8 IS NOT ON THE CTRLINE, ITS WING ENCROACHES ONTO RWY 8. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAD A LNDG OR TKOF IN BURBANK USING RWY 33. THE RTE FROM OUR GATE TO RWY 33 APPEARED TO BE OF THE SAME PROX AS THE TAXI RTE ADJACENT TO RWY 8. IN ADDITION, WHILE OUR GATE AREA IS IN A NON-MOVEMENT AREA, THE GND CTLR STILL CTLS GND MOVEMENT ON THE TAXI LINE ADJACENT TO RWY 8. IN ADDITION, NOTE OF THE DEP SECTION OF BUR STATES: FOR RWY 33 DEPS, TWR MAY HOLD YOU ADJACENT TO GATE. BE SURE TO TAXI TO END OF RWY TO ENSURE SAFE TKOF. ALSO MY FO HAD NOTED A GND CTLR TELLING ANOTHER ACR DEPARTING RWY 33 PRIOR TO US TO 'HOLD SHORT OF THE SECOND SET OF HOLD SHORT LINES.
