Narrative:

While flying an ILS approach to runway 17C in visual conditions, after passing the OM, we noticed air carrier X MD80 converging with our approach corridor. I, PNF, leveled the aircraft and kept him in sight as he came in front of us on final, and about 300 ft below and about 2 wingspans ahead of us. We advised the tower that we had him in sight and would stay above and behind him. He was on another frequency. We advised tower before they said anything, and he veered back over after lining up on our runway. We landed normally. We should examine this incident in light of the probable outcome if it was IMC conditions during this event. Without corrective action on our part, these aircraft most certainly would have gotten together at about 800-1200 ft on final, and would probably have been unable to control after air impact.

Title: F100 LNDG DFW EXPERIENCED CLOSE CALL WITH OTHER LNDG ACFT.

Narrative: WHILE FLYING AN ILS APCH TO RWY 17C IN VISUAL CONDITIONS, AFTER PASSING THE OM, WE NOTICED ACR X MD80 CONVERGING WITH OUR APCH CORRIDOR. I, PNF, LEVELED THE ACFT AND KEPT HIM IN SIGHT AS HE CAME IN FRONT OF US ON FINAL, AND ABOUT 300 FT BELOW AND ABOUT 2 WINGSPANS AHEAD OF US. WE ADVISED THE TWR THAT WE HAD HIM IN SIGHT AND WOULD STAY ABOVE AND BEHIND HIM. HE WAS ON ANOTHER FREQ. WE ADVISED TWR BEFORE THEY SAID ANYTHING, AND HE VEERED BACK OVER AFTER LINING UP ON OUR RWY. WE LANDED NORMALLY. WE SHOULD EXAMINE THIS INCIDENT IN LIGHT OF THE PROBABLE OUTCOME IF IT WAS IMC CONDITIONS DURING THIS EVENT. WITHOUT CORRECTIVE ACTION ON OUR PART, THESE ACFT MOST CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE GOTTEN TOGETHER AT ABOUT 800-1200 FT ON FINAL, AND WOULD PROBABLY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO CTL AFTER AIR IMPACT.
