Narrative:

Leading up to event, preflight completed, transponder set to assigned discrete code. Later, maintenance pilot ran aircraft to check torque system with PAR system. During ground run and hover, maintenance pilot reset transponder to 1200 (VFR). Given medevac call, I did not check transponder setting after run-up. On climb out, tower questioned transponder setting. Adjusted transponder to appropriate code and continued with mission. No other question or problems with ATC.
