Narrative:
We have a new control tower. I mistakenly thought it was closed on weekends. I called the old CTAF frequency and heard no traffic. Believing the area clear, and facing a 2 mi taxi to the other end of the runway, I took off downwind. I saw another aircraft and took evasive action. We cleared by thousands of ft. I called the control tower and reported myself voluntarily.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C150 PLT DOESN'T REALIZE THAT THE TWR IS OPEN AND TOOK OFF WITHOUT CONTACTING TWR. THE PLT MISSED ANOTHER ACFT BY 1000 FT.
Narrative: WE HAVE A NEW CTL TWR. I MISTAKENLY THOUGHT IT WAS CLOSED ON WEEKENDS. I CALLED THE OLD CTAF FREQ AND HEARD NO TFC. BELIEVING THE AREA CLR, AND FACING A 2 MI TAXI TO THE OTHER END OF THE RWY, I TOOK OFF DOWNWIND. I SAW ANOTHER ACFT AND TOOK EVASIVE ACTION. WE CLRED BY THOUSANDS OF FT. I CALLED THE CTL TWR AND RPTED MYSELF VOLUNTARILY.
