Narrative:

Crew of aircraft called on aircraft radio stating captain's CDU was locked up and would not accept any information. Tried resetting FMC circuit breakers. No help. Called line shop and asked for mechanic to bring a CDU. The parts tag indicated the part was ok to install on -300, -500, and -700 aircraft. The logbook was signed off by mechanic. (I installed the CDU.) aircraft CDU operated normally. Aircraft dispatched to ZZZ. Upon entering information from log page, computer would not accept the parts tag. Upon further review we discovered the CDU we installed was not compatible with all 700 aircraft. Maintenance control notified of situation. Maintenance control said they would inform line maintenance to have the proper CDU installed in captain's position upon arrival at ZZZ.
