Narrative:

I requested and was issued SID (CANOGA8.gmn) on takeoff. Local controller advised 'start left turn to fly the SID' or similar. I checked in with socal and was issued barometer. No vectors given. After flying 255 degree heading to intercept gmn radial, no further instructions were given, so I started right turn to 'fly the SID'. ATC complained, turned me back. 1) this is a radar SID, so ATC should have issued vectors. 2) I probably should have challenged at crossing, not turned. Confusion, because of local controller 'fly SID,' which I interpreted as like 'own navigation' and lack of vectors from socal.

Title: VNY C414 DEP MAKES INCORRECT TURN ON DEP PROC.

Narrative: I REQUESTED AND WAS ISSUED SID (CANOGA8.GMN) ON TKOF. LCL CTLR ADVISED 'START L TURN TO FLY THE SID' OR SIMILAR. I CHKED IN WITH SOCAL AND WAS ISSUED BAROMETER. NO VECTORS GIVEN. AFTER FLYING 255 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT GMN RADIAL, NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS WERE GIVEN, SO I STARTED R TURN TO 'FLY THE SID'. ATC COMPLAINED, TURNED ME BACK. 1) THIS IS A RADAR SID, SO ATC SHOULD HAVE ISSUED VECTORS. 2) I PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE CHALLENGED AT XING, NOT TURNED. CONFUSION, BECAUSE OF LCL CTLR 'FLY SID,' WHICH I INTERPED AS LIKE 'OWN NAV' AND LACK OF VECTORS FROM SOCAL.
