Narrative:

Upon departure from ewr, placed gear lever in 'up' position. Gear failed to retract and master warning, and received 'landing gear lever disagree' message on EICAS. Performed QRH procedure during, which we attempted to cycle the gear 2 more times with no success. Decided to return to ewr. No emergency was declared, but arff equipment called out as a precaution. Landing was uneventful.

Narrative: UPON DEP FROM EWR, PLACED GEAR LEVER IN 'UP' POS. GEAR FAILED TO RETRACT AND MASTER WARNING, AND RECEIVED 'LNDG GEAR LEVER DISAGREE' MESSAGE ON EICAS. PERFORMED QRH PROC DURING, WHICH WE ATTEMPTED TO CYCLE THE GEAR 2 MORE TIMES WITH NO SUCCESS. DECIDED TO RETURN TO EWR. NO EMER WAS DECLARED, BUT ARFF EQUIP CALLED OUT AS A PRECAUTION. LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL.
