Narrative:

On vector for landing on runway 10L at pdx we were vectored through the final approach into oncoming king air traffic who was cleared for a visual approach to the parallel runways. We were not cleared for a visual and had to wait for 'chatter' to stop before we could question the controller on his intentions. We went through the final approach course, with all aircraft in sight. The controller failed to authorize a visual approach for us. The result was confusion on everyone's part. They do make mistakes, even though the controller claims he did clear us. We use a cockpit procedure of setting the altitude merger to pattern altitude (1500 above AGL) when we are cleared for a visual. We had not done this until after we questioned the controllers intentions.
