Narrative:

I was established on final for runway 9 at mammoth, ca. I reduced the power to idle and prepared to flare. Until the flare, it felt like a normal approach. I'm confident that I would have rejected the approach and gone around if the approach didn't look right. The aircraft either touched down and became airborne again and then landed hard or it ballooned from the flare and then landed hard. Based upon my recollection, I don't believe I stalled above the runway and dropped from there. I have had some prior experience in operating at high elevation airports. I've landed this airplane at bruce canyon, south lake tahoe, gallup and las vegas, NM, big bear and 3 pervious times at mammoth, but never encountered the type of situation that I did at mammoth. Once I was on the ground, I instinctively attempted to maintain directional control and stop the aircraft. The aircraft did not suffer substantial damage.

Title: HARD LNDG BY THE PLT OF A BELLANCA VIKING ON RWY 9 AT MMH, CA.

Narrative: I WAS ESTABLISHED ON FINAL FOR RWY 9 AT MAMMOTH, CA. I REDUCED THE PWR TO IDLE AND PREPARED TO FLARE. UNTIL THE FLARE, IT FELT LIKE A NORMAL APCH. I'M CONFIDENT THAT I WOULD HAVE REJECTED THE APCH AND GONE AROUND IF THE APCH DIDN'T LOOK RIGHT. THE ACFT EITHER TOUCHED DOWN AND BECAME AIRBORNE AGAIN AND THEN LANDED HARD OR IT BALLOONED FROM THE FLARE AND THEN LANDED HARD. BASED UPON MY RECOLLECTION, I DON'T BELIEVE I STALLED ABOVE THE RWY AND DROPPED FROM THERE. I HAVE HAD SOME PRIOR EXPERIENCE IN OPERATING AT HIGH ELEVATION ARPTS. I'VE LANDED THIS AIRPLANE AT BRUCE CANYON, SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, GALLUP AND LAS VEGAS, NM, BIG BEAR AND 3 PERVIOUS TIMES AT MAMMOTH, BUT NEVER ENCOUNTERED THE TYPE OF SIT THAT I DID AT MAMMOTH. ONCE I WAS ON THE GND, I INSTINCTIVELY ATTEMPTED TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CTL AND STOP THE ACFT. THE ACFT DID NOT SUFFER SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.
