Narrative:

On final to runway 18R at dfw, the first officer put the gear handle down. The main gear came down, but the nose gear indicated unsafe. I executed a go around straight ahead to 3000 ft. During the go around, we discovered that the hydraulic pumps were not in the high position. The first officer positioned the switches to high and on and the nose gear came down and indicated safe. We went around the pattern and landed with no other problems. We told tower that the problem was fixed, but they declared an emergency. The fire trucks followed us to the gate. In the future, I will be more careful to ensure that all checklist items are completed and also be more careful to back up the other crew member with checklist completion.
