Narrative:

In oma the crew performed a required preflight inspection and preparations for the day's assignment of oma-ase-oak-sjc-uud. As one of many parts of the preflight procedure, the crew compared the aircraft logbook times with the current maintenance status sheet issued. No inspections were required and all other preflight operations were ok. The crew flew the schedule, oma-ase-oak, until flight support told us to not move the aircraft to sjc until further notice. The crew was later advised that a maintenance inspection of aircraft Y was not completed at the required hourly inspection time. Maintenance and operations self-disclosed this information to the local FAA. Maintenance tried to apply for a ferry permit to fly the aircraft to its home base. This was denied by the FAA. By this time, the crew's duty day was exhausted and were given a rest period. The next day this crew airlined to our home. The aircraft remained in oak, ca. The crew had no idea an inspection was missed by maintenance department. As per the current aircraft maintenance status sheet, the aircraft was legal. Corrective actions: a better system to keep track of inspection periods. Either computerized or have 2 departments watching the aircraft times and reporting to each other when an inspection is near. A correct maintenance status sheet should be in the aircraft or provided to the crew on a weekly basis by facsimile. This is a third way to catch a mistake prior to becoming a problem.

Title: A C560 CITATION FLC IS STRANDED IN OAK, CA, WHEN THEIR MAINT DEPT FINDS THAT THEIR ACFT IS OVERDUE FOR A CRITICAL INSPECTION WHILE ACFT IS AWAY FROM HOME BASE AT ZZZ, US.

A CORRECT MAINT STATUS SHEET SHOULD BE IN THE ACFT OR PROVIDED TO THE CREW ON A WKLY BASIS BY FAX. THIS IS A THIRD WAY TO CATCH A MISTAKE PRIOR TO BECOMING A PROB.
