Narrative:

On 0//tue/02, I was flying between boston and hyannis, as captain in the C402. I was cleared for takeoff from runway 27, straight out behind an airbus, with the wind from about 300 degrees. I was assigned runway heading. I told the controller I was unable to accept this, because of wake turbulence. I told him I would need a slight turn to the right to avoid the wake turbulence vortices. He said he was unable, and instructed me to taxi back in line for departure. This time, he cleared me for takeoff behind a B737, but asked me how much of a cut to the right would I require. I informed him 'not much, just 10 degrees or so.' he cleared me for takeoff and initially assigned me 280 degree heading. On contacting departure, they assigned me a 290 degree heading. Unfortunately for me, my aircraft was heavy, 8 large passenger, plus me, and it was a hot and humid night. Therefore, the climb rate in the C402 was virtually non existent. I was climbing at an airspeed of 110 KTS (just slightly above blue line), on that heading, it did not look good for clearing the buildings of downtown boston. As I neared the buildings, I could see that I would not be able to maintain VFR separation standards from those buildings. Therefore, I cut back slightly to about a 275 degree heading to maintain legal clearance. I would have called the controller and advised him of this necessary deviation, but there was constant chatter on the radio, and I never could get in a word (in fact only about 20 seconds elapsed before the controller started yelling 'what heading are you on,') I informed him at that time that I had to turn back to a 275 degree heading to avoid the buildings. They told me to call the tower upon landing in hyannis, which I did when I arrived. I was then informed by the tower supervisor that they had cleared a B737 for departure right behind me and assigned them runway heading, and that they were 'eating me up from behind' and that they had to take evasive action around me. I told him I was sorry for the inconvenience this caused, but that I certainly could not fly into the buildings, and that I also could not see who was behind me, or what was going on behind me.

Title: A C402 PLT, DEPARTING BOS, DEVIATED FROM ATC'S ASSIGNED HDG, REQUIRING THE NEXT DEP TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION AROUND HIM.

Narrative: ON 0//TUE/02, I WAS FLYING BTWN BOSTON AND HYANNIS, AS CAPT IN THE C402. I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF FROM RWY 27, STRAIGHT OUT BEHIND AN AIRBUS, WITH THE WIND FROM ABOUT 300 DEGS. I WAS ASSIGNED RWY HDG. I TOLD THE CTLR I WAS UNABLE TO ACCEPT THIS, BECAUSE OF WAKE TURB. I TOLD HIM I WOULD NEED A SLIGHT TURN TO THE R TO AVOID THE WAKE TURB VORTICES. HE SAID HE WAS UNABLE, AND INSTRUCTED ME TO TAXI BACK IN LINE FOR DEP. THIS TIME, HE CLRED ME FOR TKOF BEHIND A B737, BUT ASKED ME HOW MUCH OF A CUT TO THE R WOULD I REQUIRE. I INFORMED HIM 'NOT MUCH, JUST 10 DEGS OR SO.' HE CLRED ME FOR TKOF AND INITIALLY ASSIGNED ME 280 DEG HDG. ON CONTACTING DEP, THEY ASSIGNED ME A 290 DEG HDG. UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME, MY ACFT WAS HVY, 8 LARGE PAX, PLUS ME, AND IT WAS A HOT AND HUMID NIGHT. THEREFORE, THE CLB RATE IN THE C402 WAS VIRTUALLY NON EXISTENT. I WAS CLBING AT AN AIRSPD OF 110 KTS (JUST SLIGHTLY ABOVE BLUE LINE), ON THAT HDG, IT DID NOT LOOK GOOD FOR CLRING THE BUILDINGS OF DOWNTOWN BOSTON. AS I NEARED THE BUILDINGS, I COULD SEE THAT I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN VFR SEPARATION STANDARDS FROM THOSE BUILDINGS. THEREFORE, I CUT BACK SLIGHTLY TO ABOUT A 275 DEG HDG TO MAINTAIN LEGAL CLRNC. I WOULD HAVE CALLED THE CTLR AND ADVISED HIM OF THIS NECESSARY DEV, BUT THERE WAS CONSTANT CHATTER ON THE RADIO, AND I NEVER COULD GET IN A WORD (IN FACT ONLY ABOUT 20 SECONDS ELAPSED BEFORE THE CTLR STARTED YELLING 'WHAT HDG ARE YOU ON,') I INFORMED HIM AT THAT TIME THAT I HAD TO TURN BACK TO A 275 DEG HDG TO AVOID THE BUILDINGS. THEY TOLD ME TO CALL THE TWR UPON LNDG IN HYANNIS, WHICH I DID WHEN I ARRIVED. I WAS THEN INFORMED BY THE TWR SUPVR THAT THEY HAD CLRED A B737 FOR DEP RIGHT BEHIND ME AND ASSIGNED THEM RWY HDG, AND THAT THEY WERE 'EATING ME UP FROM BEHIND' AND THAT THEY HAD TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION AROUND ME. I TOLD HIM I WAS SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE THIS CAUSED, BUT THAT I CERTAINLY COULD NOT FLY INTO THE BUILDINGS, AND THAT I ALSO COULD NOT SEE WHO WAS BEHIND ME, OR WHAT WAS GOING ON BEHIND ME.
