Narrative:

We were on the back bay 2 departure out of sna cleared to 7000 ft, changed to 6000 ft. Cleared to turn left to 040 degree heading, then 020 degree heading, directly into traffic at 6000 ft. We were then cleared higher at the same time we got an RA which required 2000 FPM. We flew directly over a small aircraft, cleared by about 700 ft. I never saw the other aircraft, but the first officer, who was flying the plane, did. I notified socal that we had received an RA and complied with it, but it did not involve deviating from our clearance. It seems we were vectored directly toward a small aircraft which was at our altitude.
