Narrative:

Landed runway 31C at mdw. During rollout with reverse engaged, instructed by tower to turn right and contact ground. I read back that we will exit at taxiway north and contact ground. Tower realized taxiway north was blocked and amended the instruction to exit runway 31C and turn onto runway 31R, then contact ground. Ground instructed us to taxi on runway 31R to turn left on runway 22L, then taxi to the gate. Since most of the taxi time was on runways instead of txwys, my time was divided between watching for potential traffic landing or taking off on those runways, including one crossing runway and completing after landing flows and checklists. Instead of turning left onto runway 22L, we turned onto runway 22R, which was also being used at that time as a taxiway. As soon as we taxied onto runway 22R, another air carrier taxied onto runway 22R opposite direction. We stopped, and were instructed to complete a 180 degree turn and rejoin our original taxi clearance. We should have both carefully reviewed our clearance on the airport diagram and decided which was the correct runway (left/right) to taxi onto.

Title: AN MLG CREW, AFTER LNDG AT MDW, MADE A TURN CONTRARY TO ATC'S REQUEST, REQUIRING A U-TURN TO RECTIFY THE MISTAKE.

Narrative: LANDED RWY 31C AT MDW. DURING ROLLOUT WITH REVERSE ENGAGED, INSTRUCTED BY TWR TO TURN R AND CONTACT GND. I READ BACK THAT WE WILL EXIT AT TXWY N AND CONTACT GND. TWR REALIZED TXWY N WAS BLOCKED AND AMENDED THE INSTRUCTION TO EXIT RWY 31C AND TURN ONTO RWY 31R, THEN CONTACT GND. GND INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI ON RWY 31R TO TURN L ON RWY 22L, THEN TAXI TO THE GATE. SINCE MOST OF THE TAXI TIME WAS ON RWYS INSTEAD OF TXWYS, MY TIME WAS DIVIDED BTWN WATCHING FOR POTENTIAL TFC LNDG OR TAKING OFF ON THOSE RWYS, INCLUDING ONE XING RWY AND COMPLETING AFTER LNDG FLOWS AND CHKLISTS. INSTEAD OF TURNING L ONTO RWY 22L, WE TURNED ONTO RWY 22R, WHICH WAS ALSO BEING USED AT THAT TIME AS A TXWY. AS SOON AS WE TAXIED ONTO RWY 22R, ANOTHER ACR TAXIED ONTO RWY 22R OPPOSITE DIRECTION. WE STOPPED, AND WERE INSTRUCTED TO COMPLETE A 180 DEG TURN AND REJOIN OUR ORIGINAL TAXI CLRNC. WE SHOULD HAVE BOTH CAREFULLY REVIEWED OUR CLRNC ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM AND DECIDED WHICH WAS THE CORRECT RWY (L/R) TO TAXI ONTO.
