Narrative:
Departed runway 18 at C09 airport. Complete and thorough scan of entire pattern of this runway. A lesser scan of other sky areas. After commencing takeoff, I observed aircraft approaching me on the runway. I continued takeoff, then altered course to right so as to observe other aircraft. Airport traffic pattern was for runway 18. Wind was southerly and light. Katana aircraft has small head-on profile and apparently was below horizon level and difficult to see when I scanned the sky for traffic. A detailed scan of opposing traffic area would have avoided this situation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: POTENTIAL CONFLICT BTWN A NAVION ON TKOF WITH A KATANA ON SHORT FINAL, OPPOSITE DIRECTION TFC FOR THE SAME PIECE OF ASPHALT AT C09, IL.
Narrative: DEPARTED RWY 18 AT C09 ARPT. COMPLETE AND THOROUGH SCAN OF ENTIRE PATTERN OF THIS RWY. A LESSER SCAN OF OTHER SKY AREAS. AFTER COMMENCING TKOF, I OBSERVED ACFT APCHING ME ON THE RWY. I CONTINUED TKOF, THEN ALTERED COURSE TO R SO AS TO OBSERVE OTHER ACFT. ARPT TFC PATTERN WAS FOR RWY 18. WIND WAS SOUTHERLY AND LIGHT. KATANA ACFT HAS SMALL HEAD-ON PROFILE AND APPARENTLY WAS BELOW HORIZON LEVEL AND DIFFICULT TO SEE WHEN I SCANNED THE SKY FOR TFC. A DETAILED SCAN OF OPPOSING TFC AREA WOULD HAVE AVOIDED THIS SIT.
