Narrative:
As we approached the hold short line, the aircraft ahead was cleared for takeoff. I was expecting 'position and hold.' there was WX east of the field, so I was also thinking about turning the radar on to take a look at it. Somehow I decided we were given 'position and hold' when, in fact, we were not. The first officer told me to stop as I crossed the hold short line. Then tower indicated that the final was clear and we could taxi into position. My expectation of a position and hold clearance got me. I will pay more attention tin he future.
