Narrative:
ATC ground controllers in dtw are overloaded on ground. While taxiing, the controller was working 2 frequencys and missing calls on both. He mentioned to one aircraft that they weren't staffed to open another frequency. We missed a taxiway and it was hard to get a word in for clarification of our route. 2 aircraft behind us missed instructions also. They need more controllers on during the busy times like today. It will only get worse if WX and darkness compound the traffic problem. 2 weeks ago one of our aircraft was told to cross an active runway with a B727 taking off. This problem is getting worse all the time.
