Narrative:

VFR flight plan opened departing fat for psp. On return, in the cajon pass area, an ELT was heard. We notified ATC (socal approach) and spent the next 1 1/2 hours trying to locate the ELT. During the search we contacted socal approach and asked them to cancel our VFR flight plan. We did this twice. We also tried to contact riverside FSS to assure the flight plan was canceled but were not able to reach them. My wife was notified that I was 1 hour overdue. She was very distraught. When I called FSS on the ground, they said they had checked with ZLA and joshua control but didn't check with socal.
