Narrative:

First officer was PF. We were cleared earlier to descend via the korry 1 arrival. This clearance was given when we were at FL270. First officer chose to set each crossing restr into the altitude select window and then control descent rate with the 'thumb wheel' on the MCP. I suggested he leave it in VNAV and let the FMC perform the descent, but he didn't want to. I was not very happy with his unwillingness to follow my suggestion, but let him do it his way. Somehow we got behind and he didn't brief the approach until we were descending on the arrival. I was watching the crossing restrs as he was giving the brief. He did fine until crossing holey intersection. The arrival requires 'holey at or above 13000 ft -- brand at 11000 ft.' brand intersection is only 6 mi from holey intersection and so one must begin the 2000 ft descent immediately upon passing holey -- he didn't. Had I not called to his attention the situation he would have missed the restr even more. We crossed brand intersection at around 11700 ft. I think the main contributing factor was the first officer briefing on descent and not flying the aircraft. Also he should have allowed the FMS to perform the descent. The next time I find myself in this situation I won't merely suggest the use of the FMS -- I'll demand it. I will also insist that all duties such as briefings, checklists and such are performed in a timely manner so we are 'flying' the aircraft in and near the critical phase of flight.

Title: ALT XING RESTR NOT MADE WHEN FO DID NOT USE THE FMS IN VNAV FOR THE ARR PROC INTO EWR, NJ.

Narrative: FO WAS PF. WE WERE CLRED EARLIER TO DSND VIA THE KORRY 1 ARR. THIS CLRNC WAS GIVEN WHEN WE WERE AT FL270. FO CHOSE TO SET EACH XING RESTR INTO THE ALT SELECT WINDOW AND THEN CTL DSCNT RATE WITH THE 'THUMB WHEEL' ON THE MCP. I SUGGESTED HE LEAVE IT IN VNAV AND LET THE FMC PERFORM THE DSCNT, BUT HE DIDN'T WANT TO. I WAS NOT VERY HAPPY WITH HIS UNWILLINGNESS TO FOLLOW MY SUGGESTION, BUT LET HIM DO IT HIS WAY. SOMEHOW WE GOT BEHIND AND HE DIDN'T BRIEF THE APCH UNTIL WE WERE DSNDING ON THE ARR. I WAS WATCHING THE XING RESTRS AS HE WAS GIVING THE BRIEF. HE DID FINE UNTIL XING HOLEY INTXN. THE ARR REQUIRES 'HOLEY AT OR ABOVE 13000 FT -- BRAND AT 11000 FT.' BRAND INTXN IS ONLY 6 MI FROM HOLEY INTXN AND SO ONE MUST BEGIN THE 2000 FT DSCNT IMMEDIATELY UPON PASSING HOLEY -- HE DIDN'T. HAD I NOT CALLED TO HIS ATTN THE SIT HE WOULD HAVE MISSED THE RESTR EVEN MORE. WE CROSSED BRAND INTXN AT AROUND 11700 FT. I THINK THE MAIN CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS THE FO BRIEFING ON DSCNT AND NOT FLYING THE ACFT. ALSO HE SHOULD HAVE ALLOWED THE FMS TO PERFORM THE DSCNT. THE NEXT TIME I FIND MYSELF IN THIS SIT I WON'T MERELY SUGGEST THE USE OF THE FMS -- I'LL DEMAND IT. I WILL ALSO INSIST THAT ALL DUTIES SUCH AS BRIEFINGS, CHKLISTS AND SUCH ARE PERFORMED IN A TIMELY MANNER SO WE ARE 'FLYING' THE ACFT IN AND NEAR THE CRITICAL PHASE OF FLT.
