Narrative:

After takeoff from runway 1L at sna, departure control assigned 9000 ft altitude. As we were climbing, departure control vectored us to intercept the 061 degree radial outbound of the sxc VOR to the musel intersection. I was the PNF and had previously set my navaids to raw VOR data in anticipation of this directive by ATC. The PF had his navaids set for FMS direct to musel. A contributing factor to not having the navaids properly tuned, by the PF, was a rush to depart scenario caused by a maintenance issue and awaiting passenger. As I was tuning the PF's navaids as necessary, a TA sounded and I noticed we had exceeded the assigned altitude by about 500 ft. Also, at this moment, ATC queried us as to our altitude and I responded '...we are about 500 ft too high and correcting.' we corrected our mistake and ATC assigned us a higher altitude shortly thereafter.

Title: A C650 CREW, DEPARTING SNA, OVERSHOT THEIR ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative: AFTER TKOF FROM RWY 1L AT SNA, DEP CTL ASSIGNED 9000 FT ALT. AS WE WERE CLBING, DEP CTL VECTORED US TO INTERCEPT THE 061 DEG RADIAL OUTBOUND OF THE SXC VOR TO THE MUSEL INTXN. I WAS THE PNF AND HAD PREVIOUSLY SET MY NAVAIDS TO RAW VOR DATA IN ANTICIPATION OF THIS DIRECTIVE BY ATC. THE PF HAD HIS NAVAIDS SET FOR FMS DIRECT TO MUSEL. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO NOT HAVING THE NAVAIDS PROPERLY TUNED, BY THE PF, WAS A RUSH TO DEPART SCENARIO CAUSED BY A MAINT ISSUE AND AWAITING PAX. AS I WAS TUNING THE PF'S NAVAIDS AS NECESSARY, A TA SOUNDED AND I NOTICED WE HAD EXCEEDED THE ASSIGNED ALT BY ABOUT 500 FT. ALSO, AT THIS MOMENT, ATC QUERIED US AS TO OUR ALT AND I RESPONDED '...WE ARE ABOUT 500 FT TOO HIGH AND CORRECTING.' WE CORRECTED OUR MISTAKE AND ATC ASSIGNED US A HIGHER ALT SHORTLY THEREAFTER.
