Narrative:

In cruise mode on cross country flight from ege to bzn experienced catastrophic engine failure along colorado/wyoming border about 25 mi west of baggs, wy. Conditions were daylight VMC, light surface winds, under IFR flight plan, in contact with ZDV. Performed engine out landing on gravel road with no damage to aircraft, property and without injuries. Remained in contact with center through relay with overflying aircraft until we reported down and safe. Engine instruments were in normal range at time of failure. Subsequent inspection showed broken crank shaft in engine -- cause unknown at this time. Engine did not respond to initial emergency procedures and propeller seized as airspeed was slowed to best glide.
