Narrative:

Sjc has dual parallel txwys on east side of runways Y and Z. Ground instructed taxi via taxiway Z to runway 30R. Tower instructed 'position and hold, runway 30R.' pilot taxied into position on runway Y in error. Tower then cleared aircraft for takeoff. Aircraft took off on taxiway Y! Realized misread runway marker after takeoff. No mention of error by tower or pilot. Aircraft departed without incident.
