Narrative:

After taking off VFR, we picked up an IFR clearance from palm springs departure. We were then told to climb to 13000 ft on a northwest heading. Less than 1 min later, we were given a traffic alert and told to make a right turn to northeast and level at 7000 ft. We were already at 7500 ft when we received the traffic alert. We then leveled and started to return to 7000 ft when we saw the other aircraft. The conflict was avoided and we continued on our way to mcc. Supplemental information from acn 537641: by 7600 ft, began descent through 7500 ft with the traffic in sight. Told to continue climb to 13000 ft. Had visual with aircraft prior to VFR conflict but did not have IFR separation. Maintain visual scan even when IFR!
