Narrative:
In cruise, approaching first oceanic reporting point we called scottish ATC, who said they had been trying to reach us for 20 mins. We believe this is what happened. Scottish ATC had a scratchy, weak transmitter but our ears were getting blown out by other aircraft on frequency, when we had volume high enough to clearly hear center. I believe we tweaked the radios down too much, and didn't realize we were cutting scottish 'off.' note: scottish ATC has notoriously weak radios. This is a situation that can easily happen again.
