Narrative:

I understood ground control to say taxi into position for takeoff then contact tower. It is a common practice where I fly for one controller to be both on ground and tower. Earlier that night on landing I was told to stay on tower frequency to taxi, so thought nothing of ground instructing to taxi on the runway. Upon contacting tower, I was advised that I should have contacted the tower prior to taxing into position. This confusion created no conflict.

Title: SMA PLT CLAIMS GND CTLR AT LZU ISSUED CLRNC TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD.

Narrative: I UNDERSTOOD GND CTL TO SAY TAXI INTO POS FOR TKOF THEN CONTACT TWR. IT IS A COMMON PRACTICE WHERE I FLY FOR ONE CTLR TO BE BOTH ON GND AND TWR. EARLIER THAT NIGHT ON LNDG I WAS TOLD TO STAY ON TWR FREQ TO TAXI, SO THOUGHT NOTHING OF GND INSTRUCTING TO TAXI ON THE RWY. UPON CONTACTING TWR, I WAS ADVISED THAT I SHOULD HAVE CONTACTED THE TWR PRIOR TO TAXING INTO POS. THIS CONFUSION CREATED NO CONFLICT.
