Narrative:

On jan/sat/02, I was en route to big bear (L35) from corona (ajo) with radar service from socal flight following. Approximately 12 mi at altitude 9500 ft, from L35 was advised of cessna 172 off my left wing 9 O'clock position approximately 1.5 mi same altitude. I made visual contact. I was southwest of L35 and the cessna was northwest of L35, but later he was communicating that he was southwest of L35. I entered the downwind leg for runway 26 according to published procedures. The cessna was not in the proper patterns for landing on runway 26, left pattern, at L35. He was north of the shopping center and nearly over the westerly red beacon, communicating that he was downwind. I tried to advise him that he was not in the proper downwind published pattern. He would not acknowledge my xmissions. I kept communicating where I was and what my intentions were. My speed was greater than his as I entered the left base leg for runway 26 (keeping my eye on the cessna) so I thought that he would not be a factor in spite of the fact that he was not flying in the proper published patterns. I entered final for runway 26 while he was still in the improper downwind. I was on less than 1 mi final when he turned his base leg (improper pattern). I advised him to look out his right window -- he then saw me, acknowledged ('I see you'), and aborted his base pattern coming within less than 200 ft of me. During the entering of the patterns he was concerned that the unicom operator would call a taxi for his party of 3. I believe that 'this' was on his mind more than the proper patterns for left pattern for runway 26, much less listening for other traffic in the area. After landing, I did not see any of the occupants of the cessna as I think the taxi was there and took them to the village. However, I noted the side number and after arriving home inquired on the internet as to whom owned the cessna 172RG. On jan/mon/02, I called directory assistance and could find no telephone number for the registered owner to discuss this incident. Therefore, I am filing this report.

Title: A PVT PLT OF A PIPER ARROW COMPLAINS OF THE TFC PATTERN FLOWN AND THE RESULTING NMAC WITH A C172 AT L35, CA.

Narrative: ON JAN/SAT/02, I WAS ENRTE TO BIG BEAR (L35) FROM CORONA (AJO) WITH RADAR SVC FROM SOCAL FLT FOLLOWING. APPROX 12 MI AT ALT 9500 FT, FROM L35 WAS ADVISED OF CESSNA 172 OFF MY L WING 9 O'CLOCK POS APPROX 1.5 MI SAME ALT. I MADE VISUAL CONTACT. I WAS SW OF L35 AND THE CESSNA WAS NW OF L35, BUT LATER HE WAS COMMUNICATING THAT HE WAS SW OF L35. I ENTERED THE DOWNWIND LEG FOR RWY 26 ACCORDING TO PUBLISHED PROCS. THE CESSNA WAS NOT IN THE PROPER PATTERNS FOR LNDG ON RWY 26, L PATTERN, AT L35. HE WAS N OF THE SHOPPING CTR AND NEARLY OVER THE WESTERLY RED BEACON, COMMUNICATING THAT HE WAS DOWNWIND. I TRIED TO ADVISE HIM THAT HE WAS NOT IN THE PROPER DOWNWIND PUBLISHED PATTERN. HE WOULD NOT ACKNOWLEDGE MY XMISSIONS. I KEPT COMMUNICATING WHERE I WAS AND WHAT MY INTENTIONS WERE. MY SPD WAS GREATER THAN HIS AS I ENTERED THE L BASE LEG FOR RWY 26 (KEEPING MY EYE ON THE CESSNA) SO I THOUGHT THAT HE WOULD NOT BE A FACTOR IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT HE WAS NOT FLYING IN THE PROPER PUBLISHED PATTERNS. I ENTERED FINAL FOR RWY 26 WHILE HE WAS STILL IN THE IMPROPER DOWNWIND. I WAS ON LESS THAN 1 MI FINAL WHEN HE TURNED HIS BASE LEG (IMPROPER PATTERN). I ADVISED HIM TO LOOK OUT HIS R WINDOW -- HE THEN SAW ME, ACKNOWLEDGED ('I SEE YOU'), AND ABORTED HIS BASE PATTERN COMING WITHIN LESS THAN 200 FT OF ME. DURING THE ENTERING OF THE PATTERNS HE WAS CONCERNED THAT THE UNICOM OPERATOR WOULD CALL A TAXI FOR HIS PARTY OF 3. I BELIEVE THAT 'THIS' WAS ON HIS MIND MORE THAN THE PROPER PATTERNS FOR L PATTERN FOR RWY 26, MUCH LESS LISTENING FOR OTHER TFC IN THE AREA. AFTER LNDG, I DID NOT SEE ANY OF THE OCCUPANTS OF THE CESSNA AS I THINK THE TAXI WAS THERE AND TOOK THEM TO THE VILLAGE. THEREFORE, I AM FILING THIS RPT.
